I have recently visited London. In Tate Britain, there was a big Francis Bacon exhibition – he is an outstanding British artist of the 20th century. This exhibition was major. I wandered across London and
constantly came across Bacon. His works were everywhere: on the underground, on street posters, on buses sides, on plastic bags in the hands of passers-by. It seemed that, London air was impregnated in his images. And people suddenly started to look like Bacon images: grotesque and lonely.
I photographed London. Upon coming back home, there was a need to address Bacon again. And it is due to the synthesis of photographs and my impressions of his exhibition that my series Baconiada appeared.
The model of Bacons's space is theatrical; his character stays on the stage, lonely and bared. I kept this stylistics, on one hand very rigid and conditional, but at the same time giving a big plastic freedom.
My works were born in computer. In my opinion, Bacon anticipated computer deformations. Therefore the language of a digital drawing is quite appropriate for my dialogue with him. There was no task to "repeat"
Bacon, I simply wanted to liason with him.
